One of the subtle ways couples can lose connection after having children is when every interaction starts becoming about logistics.

You wake up. Instead of “Good morning,” it becomes:

“Did you change her diaper?” “Is there soccer today?” “Who’s picking him up?” “Did you remember to pack lunch?”

And before you know it, you’ve gone from being a couple to being coworkers managing a very busy corporation.

Logistics Have Their Place — Just Not All the Time

Of course, those conversations need to happen. The family needs CEOs and CFOs. But not all the time. There needs to be a moment to put down the clipboard and just enjoy each other.

This is a very common pattern that I see in couples counseling in Atlanta: two people who love each other but have quietly stopped talking like a couple.

Remembering What Connection Feels Like

One couple I worked with was recently reminiscing about an earlier time in their relationship, when they were more carefree. As they talked about a spontaneous scavenger hunt they once did in a grocery store, I couldn’t help but notice the smiles and the laughter.

They weren’t talking about schedules. They weren’t solving problems. They were remembering what it felt like to enjoy each other.

This lovely memory then paved way for the simple, yet difficult task: How can we create more of those kind of moments, even nowadays when we are inundated with a “never ending To-Do list?”

Sometimes the most important thing you can do for your marriage is to simply remember: we’re not just raising a family, we’re also a couple.
