“What am I doing wrong?”

You could be doing everything right… and still be doing it wrong.

Maybe you’ve learned communication skills. You’re choosing your words carefully. You’re trying not to argue. You’re biting your tongue.

But if your internal mindset is: “She’s so moody. I just have to put up with this. I’ll say ‘yes, dear,’ keep the peace, and wait for this to be over…” — it probably won’t work.

Why Attitude Leaks Out

Why? Because feelings have a way of leaking out. Even when you’re saying all the right things, your attitude in marriage is often louder than your words.

Think about the difference between two nurses. One performs every task correctly but seems rushed, detached, and uninterested. The other may do the exact same tasks, but with warmth, patience, and genuine care. They make you feel seen. They make you feel important. You walk away thinking, “What an incredible person.” That’s what people call excellent bedside manner.

Marriage Has Its Own Version of This…

Your spouse doesn’t just hear your words—she experiences how you feel about her. She can often sense whether you’re trying to understand her or simply trying to survive the conversation.

Yes, you can memorize all the right responses. Yes, you can check every communication box. But if your “bedside manner” is missing, your spouse will usually feel it.

At this point, many husbands say: “But I’m dealing with a very difficult patient!”

Here’s the irony: when someone consistently feels understood, valued, and cared about, they often become much easier to talk to. People naturally soften when they feel emotionally safe.

So instead of asking only, “What should I say?” try asking, “How does my spouse feel when she’s with me?”

Because in marriage, just like in medicine, people remember far less about what you said than how you made them feel.

If your communication feels like it’s missing that connection, contact us to schedule an appointment — I help husbands build not just the right words, but the right approach behind them.
